Is neutering good to do?
Q: I have an 8 month old dog, and i would like to get him neutered, but my husband thinks that it's mean to do. what is your opinion on the benefits of neutering, or on the other hand, what are some bad things about it? will it calm him down and prevent him from running off if he were to get loose?
A: It can have some behavioral benefits on some dogs like decreasing wondering as well as calming some down. neutering does prevent unwanted pregnancies as well as some types of prostate problems

Coccidia
Q: What can you do to prevent reinfestation of 3 month old puppies who are currently battling coccidiosis. they have bloody stools and are on rx from a vet. we didn't know they had it until we took them to our vet the day after we purchased them. they are on their second course of tx. i want to keep them well. i have quaranteened them and sanitzied everything i know to sanitize with bleach and ammonia (except the puppies themselves of course). i stopped letting them go outside and have them back on paper. help.
A: Some pups are hard to treat for this but realize that they eventually usually outgrow these parasites. the coccidia are actually normal inhabitants of a dogs digestive tract but overgrow in puppies and cause signs often due to stress on their developing immune systems.

Are yearly vaccinations needed?
Q: I have a lab?chow mix and he is due for his rabies vaccination which i have to get at the vets. he has had these vaccinations @ 9mos. old: distemper-hepatisitis,parainfluenza,bordetella,canine parvovirus, coronavirus and rabies. what ones are really needed, i know rabies but what else? i know the vet is going to charge me a fortune. if i can i would like to do this myself. he will be 2 in nov. i also live in florida if this makes a difference.
A: I feel that most viral vaccines of dogs today give years of immunity with most viral agents of concern, in particular parvo or distemper which are only ones that i concern myself with in most cases. every 6 months and even every year would be too much in my opinion and even all vet schools now recommend at most once every 3 year vaccinations with core viral vaccines in most adult pets

Possibly too much
Q: Hi there, i have two dogs, both are about the same weight. i was giving them their monthly dosage of sentinal and i believe one dog spit hers out and the other dog ate it. he had already eaten his own. i thought i put it far enough back in the one dogs throat that she had to swallow it. but then i noticed that where i gave them the meds, the other dog sniffed around and found something and ate it. what do i do???? will the dog that possibly got 2 tabs get sick? should i wait another month to give another tab to the dog that may have spit it out? thanks much
A: The sentinel tablets have a high margin of safety and if your dog did ingest two tablets there should be no problem. also if you aren't sure you should give the other dog another dose, with food.
Shop for: sentinel

Mastif aggression
Q: My 1 year old bulmastiff has all of a sudden became aggressive against strangers he bites i can't even take him to vet (also he is in pain his paws are hurting him hard to get up sometimes) i took him to the vet they did a culture on his nails ,fungus etc, came back negative, i love my dog and i don't want him to be able never to go anywhere what can i do?
A: Sounds like could benefit from pain meds so you could ask vet about dermaxx which can help

Chiggers
Q: We do a lot of camping and a few people we camp with got the chiggers. can my dogs get them? if so what can i do to prevent them and get rid of them? we use a preventic collar and frontline plus. thanks, ellen
A: What you are using should be fine
Shop for: preventic collar, frontline plus, frontline

Incontinence
Q: Involuntary urination when excited. dog is now five yrs old and no progress through training.
A: Need to work with trainer on behavior modification here as well as letting dog come to you or people who visit rather than coming down over him, etc. this is submissive urination and need to get down on dog level and let him come to you.
