Puppies 3 weeks old
Q: My lab had puppies 3 weeks ago tomorrow and i was wondering what i should use on them for fleas and ticks, one of my dogs has fleas and i just want to see if there is something that i can use on them or the mother since she is still feeding them.
A: I dont use typical chemical spot ons, etc until pups are at least 8 weeks old. for now you could use avon skin so soft 1.5 ounces diluted in 1/2 gallon of water and applied as leave on rinse. greasy but effective. also could try flea powder safe for puppies that you can get at pet store
Shop for: tick

Yearly vaccinations
Q: My vet sends a yearly reminder for an annual physical examination and vaccinations for distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvovirus, rabies, heartworm check, and stool check. i think the physical exam is very important for preventive health care. i have been reading about changing guidelines for vaccinations. are all the shots needed for my 5 yr old felmale dachshund? she has been taking soloxine .3 one half twice a day. your customer service does not have this prescription. do they have same medication with a different generic name? also should this be on going and how often should she have a blood test?
A: Ask pharmacist about soloxine alternative. thyroid medication is usually lifelong with periodic blood checks at your vet to make sure dose is ok. i would not keep on vaccinating her every year for these viruses especiallly given her breed which are prone to vaccine reactions and fact she has an autoimmune thyroid disorder. most vet schools now recommend every 3 year vaccinations at a minimum for things you ask about in adult dogs

Flea & tick control for rabbits
Q: I was told that i need a flea product for my rabbit and i was wondering which one is safe and the best for rabbits. she lives on our screened back porch in a cage and would need something that would repel mosquitoes/flies as well. also according to your flea/tick chart biospot works to do all things a person wants for flea/tick control. is this really the best for dogs and cats with a flea problem and very bad tick problem (they are outside pets)?
A: It is an excellent product for this. i like the topical pyethrin based sprays for rabbits however as they are very sensitive to some of the flea/tick chemicals
Shop for: tick, biospot

Dog sneezing and gagging
Q: My 3 year old male chichua is gagging and sneezing as though hes stuffed up with runny nose, what medication can i give him? also can i give the same to my 2 mo old chichua who is sneezing and green mucus comes out his nose
A: Only thing can suggest is antihistamine such as benadryl at dose of 1/2 mg per pound orally twice daily as well as extra vitamin c at dose of 250 mg twice dailyh in form of ester c. i would take to vet to evaluate for viral or bacterial infection
Shop for: vitamin, antihistamine

Scratched by a ground hog
Q: My dog got in a fight with a ground hog. the ground hog lost but my dog got scratches which bled on her snout and under her chin. other than cleaning the wounds, is there anything we should do considering this was a wild animal.? also, i'm concerned because she got the ground hogs blood in her mouth.
A: You might want to take to vet for exam and updated rabies shot if not already current. also might need antibiotics

Hip dysplasia
Q: My vet has recommended that my dog get a total hip replacement. she has had surgery on her knee. because of her hips she popped her knee out.that surgery alone was 1000.00 dollars. then not even a week later i checked her dressing and the nail or pin had come out. they had to go back in. she cried so much. a year later the pin was coming out again pushing on her skin i had to take her back in and they had to take it out. this time 250.oo. this total hip replacement is going to cost 3,000.00 per leg. she said hers is very severe she is only 3 years old. i cant afford such a surgery. we all love her dearly. she has recomened that i put her on deramaxx or rimadyl. rimadyl is 100.00 per bottle. i wonder if i can find a cheaper price online. please if you know of anything at all i should do please let me know. she is the most sweetest loving dog. and i dont want to see her sufer. but on the other hand how long can she live this way with out the surgery? thank-you mrs.denise allen
A: You could also try a veterinary acupuncturist by finding one at altvetmed.com as sometimes gold bead implants in hips can help tremendously. check with 1800petmeds pharmacist for price on meds
Shop for: rimadyl, 1800petmeds, deramaxx
