Is neutering good to do?Q: I have an 8 month old dog, and i would like to get him neutered, but my husband thinks that it's mean to do. what is your opinion on the benefits of neutering, or on the other hand, what are some bad things about it? will it calm him down and prevent him from running off if he were to get loose? A: It can have some behavioral benefits on some dogs like decreasing wondering as well as calming some down. neutering does prevent unwanted pregnancies as well as some types of prostate problems
Sores and hairlossQ: My dog has sores all over his body and he is losing his hair. it started on his chest, i thought it was from him tryin to get his coller off, but now its all over his body. i noticed today that he has a rash all over him. is there anything over the counter a can treat him with? A: Not really other than getting good antibacterial shampoo from 1800petmeds such as oxydex or chlorihexiderm which you can use every few days. also can use oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily which might ease itching but he likely needs vet visit and antibiotics, anti inflammatories, etc

Puppies 3 weeks oldQ: My lab had puppies 3 weeks ago tomorrow and i was wondering what i should use on them for fleas and ticks, one of my dogs has fleas and i just want to see if there is something that i can use on them or the mother since she is still feeding them. A: I dont use typical chemical spot ons, etc until pups are at least 8 weeks old. for now you could use avon skin so soft 1.5 ounces diluted in 1/2 gallon of water and applied as leave on rinse. greasy but effective. also could try flea powder safe for puppies that you can get at pet store

PrednisoloneQ: My 17 yr old cat was diagnosed with a type of inflamatory bowel disease after i got her at age 1.shes been on prednisone for years, and the last 3 yrs on prednisolone 2.5mg gel caps,1 cap per week. she's easily stressed, last vet visit she didnt eat for 4 days, lost 3 of her 9 lb.! had to force feed. now my vet wants to work her up before giving any more pills for her! i dont agree at her age to put her thru that, and to find out only that she aging, with signs of kidney disease again. can i stop this medication, or try something else thru petmeds? i am at my wits end about this. thank you A: I cannot recommend you just blanketly stop medicine unless cat has no signs of inflammatory bowel disease i.e. vomit diarrhea or weight loss. explain to vet your concern about visits and ask him for prescriptions to address ibd, and other alternatives like flagyl as well. you could also try slippery elm from health food store for bowel flareups(see book dr. pitcairns guide to natural health for dogs and cats by richard pitcairn, or book the new natural cat by anitra frazier for dosings of this and diet suggestions) also add prozyme from 1800petmeds to his diet as well. if vet not willing you could look up holistic vet on www.theavh.org many who work by phone with clients

Lymes diseaseQ: Yesterday i took my dog to the vet because it looked like he wasn't eating, because he barely had a bowel movement and was distended, the vet did x-rays took blood and said that my dog had lymes and it was in his kidney causing high amounts of protein in his urine. my first question is, is it possible for a dog to have such a high extreme of lymes without ever showing joint pain. and second, is there hope? please respond asap because today is the day. thank you dona wester A: There are small percentage of dogs esp certain family of labradors who are genetically prone to kidney form of lyme disease. sometimes can be no warning. best prevention is good tick control i dont recommend lyme vaccination as has not been proven safe or effective in my opinion and not recommended by top vet schools like penn or cornell, two leading research institutions on this disease
