Is neutering good to do?Q: I have an 8 month old dog, and i would like to get him neutered, but my husband thinks that it's mean to do. what is your opinion on the benefits of neutering, or on the other hand, what are some bad things about it? will it calm him down and prevent him from running off if he were to get loose? A: It can have some behavioral benefits on some dogs like decreasing wondering as well as calming some down. neutering does prevent unwanted pregnancies as well as some types of prostate problems
Breeding?Q: My boxer is pregnant and we are not sure who the father is? she is in her 2nd heat and is a healthy young dog. while i was breeding her mother-with a stud, we discovered she was in heat or still in heat-now it appears that she's very pregnant. next question-she may have been had by her big brother, as no one saw her get breed, and she was seperated from all males except him! this is not the ideal situation-but she's very pregnant and have no knowledge of breeding between brother & sister(although this is not what we wanted-should i expect any problems or may she have a normal pregnancy. do believe her to be about 3 weeks into her pregnancy if not 4 weeks! i thank you for any answers and/or advice you may offer. the nearest local vet for us is 50 miles away 1 way, mountains of pa i thank you in advance for your time and assistance with this question and situation. respectfully donna & bill clark A: Tough situation as of course there is always risk of inbreeding genetic problems that can crop up while other times they are fine. it is like russian roulette. of course best if it did not occur
DandruffQ: Seems to come on when fall and winter comes and the home heat is turned on..he also likes to sleep on the solariums heated ceramic floor..what can i do to control the dry flaking skin? he is a long hair 12 yr. old and has had a complete thyroidectomy..has a moderate heart murmer and is on atenalol one quarter of a 25mg.tablet once a day. thankyou for your response. A: I would try treating internall with derm caps and prozyme from 1800petmeds added to each meal. also consider better all natural diet like pet guard or wellness brand foods. if your cat is cooperative shampooing with chlorihexiderm shampoo can help as well

Severe scratchingQ: My little doggie, a jack russell/daschund mix, is scratching himself non-stop. his vet recommended benadryl, however it does not seem to be helping. he has really dry skin, flaking, and very red spots. his hair is also thinning, and he has always had a beautiful coat. he does not have any fleas on him, nor have i seen any around. the itching is bothering him so much he can't sleep. i have been washing him in oatmeal shampoo, and even tried a spray the vet gave. what can i do to help my baby feel better??? A: Sounds like need stronger shampoo such as oxydex shampoo or chlorihexiderm shampoo used a few times weekly which you can get from 1800petmeds. also should have vet check skin for overgrowth of yeast of bacteria that might need oral antibiotics or antifungals. also might need to address underyling allergies with stronger prescription antihistamines, etc
Shop for: antihistamine, 1800petmeds
Reactions?Q: I see you told an owner about continueing to give heartgard to a pet that is positive for heartworm disease. aren't you concerned about the anaphylactic shock that is going to occur and potentially kill her dog? i mean, isn't that the reason we test for heartworm disease prior to tprevention, so we can rule out being positive? A: In actuality there are many vet cardiologists who actually recommend monthly heartworm preventative to heartworm positive dogs if patient too big a risk for treatment i.e too old or too large a worm burden or severe lung disease present, etc; in these cases monthly heartworm preventative can actually prevent further reproduction and larvae development while of course not doing anything for adults present. ||anaphylactic reactions are extremely rare with monthly heartworm preventatives in positive dogs and only used to occur when old daily preventatives were used where dog had to be negative for heartworms as anaphalaxis more likely.||these are the medical facts. of course always best to know status of all dogs but your statements are not true
