Fatty tumors
Q: Ihave never heard of vaccines causing fatty tumors in dogs. please tell me more and your source of info so i can research this myself. thank you.
A: As i am a homeopathic vet as well as conventional vet this is from my homeopathic training. you could check out two books that may be helpful. one is called homeopathy for dogs and cats; small doses for small animals by don hamilton, dvm; other is dr. pitcairn's guide to natural health for dogs and cats by ricahrd pitcairn. did you ever wonder why warts, skin tags, lipomas, etc are so common in pets compared to people. pets are way overvaccinated every year and this has gone for 30 years.

Blood in cats ear
Q: My cat has been scratching her ear non-stop for weeks. now i've discovered that she has scratched herself to the point of drawing blood; and there is alot of dry blood deep in her ear. how can i clean the blood out of her ear canal, and will it cause any deafness? thank you
A: Your cat needs vet exam of ear canal for best solution here and appropriate medicine given intensity of symptoms you describe
Clear urine at first but then bloody
Q: When i walk my dog ( 7 years old ) his urine is clear. after he gets done his main needs and then trys to mark his territory at the end of his walk, his urine turns red with blood. i don't mean tinted red, i mean red red. it is only at the end of the walk. i am concerned since it is not all the time only at the end of the walk. thank you, tammy
A: Still could be urinary tract infection or possible bladder stone. take to vet for exam and urine analysis and x rays if needed
Yearly vaccinations
Q: My vet sends a yearly reminder for an annual physical examination and vaccinations for distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvovirus, rabies, heartworm check, and stool check. i think the physical exam is very important for preventive health care. i have been reading about changing guidelines for vaccinations. are all the shots needed for my 5 yr old felmale dachshund? she has been taking soloxine .3 one half twice a day. your customer service does not have this prescription. do they have same medication with a different generic name? also should this be on going and how often should she have a blood test?
A: Ask pharmacist about soloxine alternative. thyroid medication is usually lifelong with periodic blood checks at your vet to make sure dose is ok. i would not keep on vaccinating her every year for these viruses especiallly given her breed which are prone to vaccine reactions and fact she has an autoimmune thyroid disorder. most vet schools now recommend every 3 year vaccinations at a minimum for things you ask about in adult dogs
Severe scratching
Q: My little doggie, a jack russell/daschund mix, is scratching himself non-stop. his vet recommended benadryl, however it does not seem to be helping. he has really dry skin, flaking, and very red spots. his hair is also thinning, and he has always had a beautiful coat. he does not have any fleas on him, nor have i seen any around. the itching is bothering him so much he can't sleep. i have been washing him in oatmeal shampoo, and even tried a spray the vet gave. what can i do to help my baby feel better???
A: Sounds like need stronger shampoo such as oxydex shampoo or chlorihexiderm shampoo used a few times weekly which you can get from 1800petmeds. also should have vet check skin for overgrowth of yeast of bacteria that might need oral antibiotics or antifungals. also might need to address underyling allergies with stronger prescription antihistamines, etc

Possibly too much
Q: Hi there, i have two dogs, both are about the same weight. i was giving them their monthly dosage of sentinal and i believe one dog spit hers out and the other dog ate it. he had already eaten his own. i thought i put it far enough back in the one dogs throat that she had to swallow it. but then i noticed that where i gave them the meds, the other dog sniffed around and found something and ate it. what do i do???? will the dog that possibly got 2 tabs get sick? should i wait another month to give another tab to the dog that may have spit it out? thanks much
A: The sentinel tablets have a high margin of safety and if your dog did ingest two tablets there should be no problem. also if you aren't sure you should give the other dog another dose, with food.

Crusted matter around eyes
Q: My dog's eyes have a thick buildup of crusted matter after a few days. i have asked the vet about it, but he seems to dismiss it. it is very unsightly and i have tried over the counter products to no avail. i am worried that he may develop an infection around his eyes because of this. he was a severly abused dog when i got him, he also had demodec mange. he's been an expensive proposition but i love him dearly. any suggestions on what else i can try.
A: If you are that concerned with eyes and your vet is dismissing your concerns, then see a veterinary opthomologist for peace of mind. your vet may be right to leave alone, but you sound like you want to be certain
We need help
Q: We have an aprox. 11 yr old jack russel male dog who is constantly itching his belly on the floor. he is extremely red and irratated almost constantly, unless he is laying in the sun. he is given benadryl but it doesn't seem to help at all. he is washed with an oatmeal and aloe shampoo and has used advantage for flea control but w/o checking with companion pet clinic we cannot be sure of the last administration date or whether it is still active or not. however, even after having been given the flea control he still was constantly itching w/in a short amount of time. he has very short hair (obviously due to his breed) so you can see fleas and their eggs but he doesn't really appear to be infested at this time. he had been prescribed gentocin spray 2x p/day for 7 days at a time for no more than 14 days. he has long since been out of this but it really did not seem to make a difference either. he also takes phenylpropanolamine 50 mg. 1/4 tab 2x p/day for bladder issues. we seriously need some advice. we are a group home with 4 clients who love their dog but the itching is driving everyone crazy, please help. thank you.
A: Cheapest solution is low dose alternative day prednisone therapy if dont want more extensive workup at vet for allergies. need to totally get rid of fleas in allergic dogs as even a few fleas can cause problems. also consider low allergy diet like california natural lamb and rice diet by natura brand. also consider brite coat xs as well as prozyme from 1800petmeds added to food long term.
