Cetyl myristoleateQ: Do you carry the supplement cetyl myristoleate? have there been any clinical studies that show this to be helpful for dogs? thanks jeff A: We do not. i've seen reference to studies in human patients, but none in dogs.
ArthritisQ: My 7 year old lab has arthritis. he weights about 100 pounds. what would you remend? thank you. A: We often prescribe many effective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents for arthritis. many of these are quite expensive for a dog your pet's size. you should first see your veterinarian for a proper diagnosis as we often will check blood work to make sure that your pet can handle these medications. some of the better ones include rimadyl and |deramaxx, which all may be available somewhat cheaper through pet meds.|you can also add vitamin c in the form|of ester c to your pet's diet at a dose|of 1 to 2 grams a day in addition to|vitamin e at 400 iu a day, which have no side effects. there are also some|excellent glucosamine supplements including cosequin, and i often use a group of nutrients known as bioflavenoids in helping pets with arthritis. proanthocyanidins are such examples and can be harmlessly added|to a 100 pound dog's diet at 100 mg once to twice daily. hope this helps.

Limping and walking on three legsQ: My 50 # dog has been on deramaxx 1/2 of 100 mg a day for about 1 1/2 months and it seems not to been working as good as it did before. could he be getting immune to it? if he is what should i do? his left front leg is giving he troble and he is limping. x rays viewed by vet and gave him a shot of corazone. A: You may want to have neck x rayed as he may have cervical disc problem causing front leg lameness rather than the leg itself. in that case low doses of cortisone are more effective

Sores and hairlossQ: My dog has sores all over his body and he is losing his hair. it started on his chest, i thought it was from him tryin to get his coller off, but now its all over his body. i noticed today that he has a rash all over him. is there anything over the counter a can treat him with? A: Not really other than getting good antibacterial shampoo from 1800petmeds such as oxydex or chlorihexiderm which you can use every few days. also can use oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily which might ease itching but he likely needs vet visit and antibiotics, anti inflammatories, etc

What damage could tape worms have done to my dog?Q: I have a mixed breed dog that is almost two. there is a park right behind our house, and it is full of rabbits, squirrels, ground squirrels, and birds. she keeps getting tape worms and i think it is from finding and playing with the bodies of these other animals. we treat her with tablets and it goes away, but they keep coming back. we've been trying to keep her out of the park and away from the animals, but i'm worried about the long term effects the reocurring tapeworms will have on her. what should i look for and what can i do? A: Most of time tapeworms do not cause any significant clinical illness in dogs or cats. most common sign are anal itching or irritation in that area. rarely any other reactions.
