Scratched by a ground hogQ: My dog got in a fight with a ground hog. the ground hog lost but my dog got scratches which bled on her snout and under her chin. other than cleaning the wounds, is there anything we should do considering this was a wild animal.? also, i'm concerned because she got the ground hogs blood in her mouth. A: You might want to take to vet for exam and updated rabies shot if not already current. also might need antibiotics

Severe scratchingQ: My little doggie, a jack russell/daschund mix, is scratching himself non-stop. his vet recommended benadryl, however it does not seem to be helping. he has really dry skin, flaking, and very red spots. his hair is also thinning, and he has always had a beautiful coat. he does not have any fleas on him, nor have i seen any around. the itching is bothering him so much he can't sleep. i have been washing him in oatmeal shampoo, and even tried a spray the vet gave. what can i do to help my baby feel better??? A: Sounds like need stronger shampoo such as oxydex shampoo or chlorihexiderm shampoo used a few times weekly which you can get from 1800petmeds. also should have vet check skin for overgrowth of yeast of bacteria that might need oral antibiotics or antifungals. also might need to address underyling allergies with stronger prescription antihistamines, etc

Are yearly vaccinations needed?Q: I have a lab?chow mix and he is due for his rabies vaccination which i have to get at the vets. he has had these vaccinations @ 9mos. old: distemper-hepatisitis,parainfluenza,bordetella,canine parvovirus, coronavirus and rabies. what ones are really needed, i know rabies but what else? i know the vet is going to charge me a fortune. if i can i would like to do this myself. he will be 2 in nov. i also live in florida if this makes a difference. A: I feel that most viral vaccines of dogs today give years of immunity with most viral agents of concern, in particular parvo or distemper which are only ones that i concern myself with in most cases. every 6 months and even every year would be too much in my opinion and even all vet schools now recommend at most once every 3 year vaccinations with core viral vaccines in most adult pets
ParvoQ: I have a 4month old black lab who has parvo. i also have another puppy. i am trying to keep them seperated. the black lab had only one set of shots but my other puppy has had two sets of shots and i gave her the third parvo shot today b/c the vet said i could give it a week early. do you think she will be safe from developing the parvo virus. also what is a normal body temperature of a dog and how is the best way to take the temperature of a dog. i am treating the lab with iv fluids sq and giving him daily injections of rocephin. however my other puppy was around him all weekend and has been out in the same yard. my lab did not develope any symptoms until after i had him neutered last friday. A: I dont like neutering males this young even though the shelters do this because it is a shock to their immune system and can predispose to parvo attack. more vaccines are not necessarily better. they should be spaced out at least 2.5 to 3 weeks otherwise you may suppress immune system. no guarantees that other dog will not get parvo; have to wait an see. normal temp of dog is 100 to 102 degrees farenheit
DandruffQ: Seems to come on when fall and winter comes and the home heat is turned on..he also likes to sleep on the solariums heated ceramic floor..what can i do to control the dry flaking skin? he is a long hair 12 yr. old and has had a complete thyroidectomy..has a moderate heart murmer and is on atenalol one quarter of a 25mg.tablet once a day. thankyou for your response. A: I would try treating internall with derm caps and prozyme from 1800petmeds added to each meal. also consider better all natural diet like pet guard or wellness brand foods. if your cat is cooperative shampooing with chlorihexiderm shampoo can help as well

Sores and hairlossQ: My dog has sores all over his body and he is losing his hair. it started on his chest, i thought it was from him tryin to get his coller off, but now its all over his body. i noticed today that he has a rash all over him. is there anything over the counter a can treat him with? A: Not really other than getting good antibacterial shampoo from 1800petmeds such as oxydex or chlorihexiderm which you can use every few days. also can use oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily which might ease itching but he likely needs vet visit and antibiotics, anti inflammatories, etc
