Limping and walking on three legs
Q: My 50 # dog has been on deramaxx 1/2 of 100 mg a day for about 1 1/2 months and it seems not to been working as good as it did before. could he be getting immune to it? if he is what should i do? his left front leg is giving he troble and he is limping. x rays viewed by vet and gave him a shot of corazone.
A: You may want to have neck x rayed as he may have cervical disc problem causing front leg lameness rather than the leg itself. in that case low doses of cortisone are more effective

Dog sneezing and gagging
Q: My 3 year old male chichua is gagging and sneezing as though hes stuffed up with runny nose, what medication can i give him? also can i give the same to my 2 mo old chichua who is sneezing and green mucus comes out his nose
A: Only thing can suggest is antihistamine such as benadryl at dose of 1/2 mg per pound orally twice daily as well as extra vitamin c at dose of 250 mg twice dailyh in form of ester c. i would take to vet to evaluate for viral or bacterial infection

Arthritis
Q: My 7 year old lab has arthritis. he weights about 100 pounds. what would you remend? thank you.
A: We often prescribe many effective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents for arthritis. many of these are quite expensive for a dog your pet's size. you should first see your veterinarian for a proper diagnosis as we often will check blood work to make sure that your pet can handle these medications. some of the better ones include rimadyl and |deramaxx, which all may be available somewhat cheaper through pet meds.|you can also add vitamin c in the form|of ester c to your pet's diet at a dose|of 1 to 2 grams a day in addition to|vitamin e at 400 iu a day, which have no side effects. there are also some|excellent glucosamine supplements including cosequin, and i often use a group of nutrients known as bioflavenoids in helping pets with arthritis. proanthocyanidins are such examples and can be harmlessly added|to a 100 pound dog's diet at 100 mg once to twice daily. hope this helps.

Behavior
Q: We have two large dogs, each 6 yrs old. during the day they are in a pen adjacent to the house, when we are home they are in the house. they (not for sure which one) are getting very destructive when left alone outside while we are at work - like chewing up the door frame and even the door knob. i have used chew-stop, but has not stopped the problem. what would you suggest?
A: Sounds like separation anxiety and you coudl ask your vet about meds like amitryptylline or clomicalm
Bumps between toes
Q: My jake russell as gotten 2 red bumps between her toe. it goes down then it seens to fill up again with fluid. we have gone to the vet 2 times. we got a med. called tritop. i soak her foot when i think about it in epsom salt. it helps. it seems as if something sets it off, outside or inside.the vet does not seem to know other then sometimes this happens and its nonthing to worrie about. it does not seen to upset the dog as it does me! any ideas louann
A: Could be simple allergic reaction. i would not worry if not enlarging or bothering dog. only way to defintiively diagnose is with biopsy
Fatty tumors
Q: Ihave never heard of vaccines causing fatty tumors in dogs. please tell me more and your source of info so i can research this myself. thank you.
A: As i am a homeopathic vet as well as conventional vet this is from my homeopathic training. you could check out two books that may be helpful. one is called homeopathy for dogs and cats; small doses for small animals by don hamilton, dvm; other is dr. pitcairn's guide to natural health for dogs and cats by ricahrd pitcairn. did you ever wonder why warts, skin tags, lipomas, etc are so common in pets compared to people. pets are way overvaccinated every year and this has gone for 30 years.

Breeding?
Q: My boxer is pregnant and we are not sure who the father is? she is in her 2nd heat and is a healthy young dog. while i was breeding her mother-with a stud, we discovered she was in heat or still in heat-now it appears that she's very pregnant. next question-she may have been had by her big brother, as no one saw her get breed, and she was seperated from all males except him! this is not the ideal situation-but she's very pregnant and have no knowledge of breeding between brother & sister(although this is not what we wanted-should i expect any problems or may she have a normal pregnancy. do believe her to be about 3 weeks into her pregnancy if not 4 weeks! i thank you for any answers and/or advice you may offer. the nearest local vet for us is 50 miles away 1 way, mountains of pa i thank you in advance for your time and assistance with this question and situation. respectfully donna & bill clark
A: Tough situation as of course there is always risk of inbreeding genetic problems that can crop up while other times they are fine. it is like russian roulette. of course best if it did not occur
Prednisolone
Q: My 17 yr old cat was diagnosed with a type of inflamatory bowel disease after i got her at age 1.shes been on prednisone for years, and the last 3 yrs on prednisolone 2.5mg gel caps,1 cap per week. she's easily stressed, last vet visit she didnt eat for 4 days, lost 3 of her 9 lb.! had to force feed. now my vet wants to work her up before giving any more pills for her! i dont agree at her age to put her thru that, and to find out only that she aging, with signs of kidney disease again. can i stop this medication, or try something else thru petmeds? i am at my wits end about this. thank you
A: I cannot recommend you just blanketly stop medicine unless cat has no signs of inflammatory bowel disease i.e. vomit diarrhea or weight loss. explain to vet your concern about visits and ask him for prescriptions to address ibd, and other alternatives like flagyl as well. you could also try slippery elm from health food store for bowel flareups(see book dr. pitcairns guide to natural health for dogs and cats by richard pitcairn, or book the new natural cat by anitra frazier for dosings of this and diet suggestions) also add prozyme from 1800petmeds to his diet as well. if vet not willing you could look up holistic vet on www.theavh.org many who work by phone with clients
