Puppies 3 weeks old
Q: My lab had puppies 3 weeks ago tomorrow and i was wondering what i should use on them for fleas and ticks, one of my dogs has fleas and i just want to see if there is something that i can use on them or the mother since she is still feeding them.
A: I dont use typical chemical spot ons, etc until pups are at least 8 weeks old. for now you could use avon skin so soft 1.5 ounces diluted in 1/2 gallon of water and applied as leave on rinse. greasy but effective. also could try flea powder safe for puppies that you can get at pet store
Shop for: tick

Dog allergies
Q: I have a rednose pitt bull(male) in the 100 lb. range approximately 5 y.o.a. and he suffers from severe allergies. when he gets these allergies, he looks like he has been in a fifteen round boxing match and lost. eyes swollen and allmost shut, snout swollen, and welts all over his body along with excessive scratching of the side of his face and his underside... paws included. is this common with this breed of dog? also i give him 50mg.of benadryl 3x a day until allergies diminish which may take a couple of days. should i increase the dosage to 75mg.or will that be to much. any suggestion concerning this condition would be greatly appreciated. this occurs 1 to 2 times per year and it started about 3 y.o.a
A: You could try increased dose of benadryl and if no help with that than you could try different anthistamines like chlortrimeton at dose of 8 mg twice daily in this sized dog or tavist at dose of 1.34 mg tablets--two tablets twice daily. of course if no help should see your vet for stronger meds. also consider supplementing with omega 3 fatty acids which can help allergies long term like brite coat es from 1800petmeds

Sore foot
Q: Our dog has came up with a big red lump and today it started to bleed what do you think it is
A: Hard to tell without seeing it. could be infection, abcess or tumor. take him to vet

Medication
Q: My dog is 15 and taking temiral-p for his skin problems. the vet wants to do blood work. do you feel this is common practice and necessary? thank you
A: Yes it is since this drug has small amount of prednisone in it and so liver/kidneys shoudl be monitored
Shop for: prednisone

Incontinence
Q: Involuntary urination when excited. dog is now five yrs old and no progress through training.
A: Need to work with trainer on behavior modification here as well as letting dog come to you or people who visit rather than coming down over him, etc. this is submissive urination and need to get down on dog level and let him come to you.

Behavioral changes
Q: I am currently 8 mths pregnant with my first child and have seen a change in my dog's behavior which has gotten progressively worse as my pregnancy advances. my yorkie is 5 years old and normally has a very sweet and loving disposition. since i became pregnant in september he has started nipping and occasionally biting me (and only me) without warning. these occurrences have become more frequent in the last few months. his overall disposition is still the same, even with me most of the time. do you have any suggestions and could this behavior be related to the pregnancy?
A: Could be behavioral anxiety related to pregnancy. give him lots of love and reassurance and try giving rescue remedy several times daily from health food store which can also help

Double topical medications
Q: Is it safe to use frontline plus and advantage k9 together at the same time in order to get the best of both medications i have a 70 lb lab
A: Just use the k9 advantage alone and you should get the desired effectiveness without overdosing your dog.
Shop for: advantage, k9, frontline plus, frontline

Crusted matter around eyes
Q: My dog's eyes have a thick buildup of crusted matter after a few days. i have asked the vet about it, but he seems to dismiss it. it is very unsightly and i have tried over the counter products to no avail. i am worried that he may develop an infection around his eyes because of this. he was a severly abused dog when i got him, he also had demodec mange. he's been an expensive proposition but i love him dearly. any suggestions on what else i can try.
A: If you are that concerned with eyes and your vet is dismissing your concerns, then see a veterinary opthomologist for peace of mind. your vet may be right to leave alone, but you sound like you want to be certain
