Breeding?
Q: My boxer is pregnant and we are not sure who the father is? she is in her 2nd heat and is a healthy young dog. while i was breeding her mother-with a stud, we discovered she was in heat or still in heat-now it appears that she's very pregnant. next question-she may have been had by her big brother, as no one saw her get breed, and she was seperated from all males except him! this is not the ideal situation-but she's very pregnant and have no knowledge of breeding between brother & sister(although this is not what we wanted-should i expect any problems or may she have a normal pregnancy. do believe her to be about 3 weeks into her pregnancy if not 4 weeks! i thank you for any answers and/or advice you may offer. the nearest local vet for us is 50 miles away 1 way, mountains of pa i thank you in advance for your time and assistance with this question and situation. respectfully donna & bill clark
A: Tough situation as of course there is always risk of inbreeding genetic problems that can crop up while other times they are fine. it is like russian roulette. of course best if it did not occur

Dog allergies
Q: I have a rednose pitt bull(male) in the 100 lb. range approximately 5 y.o.a. and he suffers from severe allergies. when he gets these allergies, he looks like he has been in a fifteen round boxing match and lost. eyes swollen and allmost shut, snout swollen, and welts all over his body along with excessive scratching of the side of his face and his underside... paws included. is this common with this breed of dog? also i give him 50mg.of benadryl 3x a day until allergies diminish which may take a couple of days. should i increase the dosage to 75mg.or will that be to much. any suggestion concerning this condition would be greatly appreciated. this occurs 1 to 2 times per year and it started about 3 y.o.a
A: You could try increased dose of benadryl and if no help with that than you could try different anthistamines like chlortrimeton at dose of 8 mg twice daily in this sized dog or tavist at dose of 1.34 mg tablets--two tablets twice daily. of course if no help should see your vet for stronger meds. also consider supplementing with omega 3 fatty acids which can help allergies long term like brite coat es from 1800petmeds

Which product?
Q: I have a 15lb papillon 17 mos. old. which brand flea & tick product do you recommend for him. i am currently using advantage but notice you favor frontline. i noticed bio spot for dogs is inexpensive and according to your comparison chart does the same thing as the more expensive ones. thank you dolly sanders
A: Biospot is another flea preventative but it is not waterproof and can be washed off. we really don't favor one product over another but the frontline plus gives added protection against the flea eggs & larvae. if you are using advantage and are satisfied with the results, "if it's not broke, don't fix it"!
Shop for: advantage, frontline, tick

Sore foot
Q: Our dog has came up with a big red lump and today it started to bleed what do you think it is
A: Hard to tell without seeing it. could be infection, abcess or tumor. take him to vet

Incontinence
Q: Involuntary urination when excited. dog is now five yrs old and no progress through training.
A: Need to work with trainer on behavior modification here as well as letting dog come to you or people who visit rather than coming down over him, etc. this is submissive urination and need to get down on dog level and let him come to you.

Lymes disease
Q: Yesterday i took my dog to the vet because it looked like he wasn't eating, because he barely had a bowel movement and was distended, the vet did x-rays took blood and said that my dog had lymes and it was in his kidney causing high amounts of protein in his urine. my first question is, is it possible for a dog to have such a high extreme of lymes without ever showing joint pain. and second, is there hope? please respond asap because today is the day. thank you dona wester
A: There are small percentage of dogs esp certain family of labradors who are genetically prone to kidney form of lyme disease. sometimes can be no warning. best prevention is good tick control i dont recommend lyme vaccination as has not been proven safe or effective in my opinion and not recommended by top vet schools like penn or cornell, two leading research institutions on this disease

Behavioral changes
Q: I am currently 8 mths pregnant with my first child and have seen a change in my dog's behavior which has gotten progressively worse as my pregnancy advances. my yorkie is 5 years old and normally has a very sweet and loving disposition. since i became pregnant in september he has started nipping and occasionally biting me (and only me) without warning. these occurrences have become more frequent in the last few months. his overall disposition is still the same, even with me most of the time. do you have any suggestions and could this behavior be related to the pregnancy?
A: Could be behavioral anxiety related to pregnancy. give him lots of love and reassurance and try giving rescue remedy several times daily from health food store which can also help
