Bumps between toes
Q: My jake russell as gotten 2 red bumps between her toe. it goes down then it seens to fill up again with fluid. we have gone to the vet 2 times. we got a med. called tritop. i soak her foot when i think about it in epsom salt. it helps. it seems as if something sets it off, outside or inside.the vet does not seem to know other then sometimes this happens and its nonthing to worrie about. it does not seen to upset the dog as it does me! any ideas louann
A: Could be simple allergic reaction. i would not worry if not enlarging or bothering dog. only way to defintiively diagnose is with biopsy

Rimadyl
Q: I am aware that rimadyl can affect dogs liver and kidneys. is rimadyl used for occasional pain or should it be used or a continual basis? my 9 yr old shepherd is on the super joint enhance and the vet has her on l00 mg of rimadyl..daily..and she has been on it for quite some time. i am concerned about the long term effects of the rimadyl.
A: With regular testing it should be o.k. to continue with the rimadyl. your veterinarian may at some point reduce the dosage.

Reactions?
Q: I see you told an owner about continueing to give heartgard to a pet that is positive for heartworm disease. aren't you concerned about the anaphylactic shock that is going to occur and potentially kill her dog? i mean, isn't that the reason we test for heartworm disease prior to tprevention, so we can rule out being positive?
A: In actuality there are many vet cardiologists who actually recommend monthly heartworm preventative to heartworm positive dogs if patient too big a risk for treatment i.e too old or too large a worm burden or severe lung disease present, etc; in these cases monthly heartworm preventative can actually prevent further reproduction and larvae development while of course not doing anything for adults present. ||anaphylactic reactions are extremely rare with monthly heartworm preventatives in positive dogs and only used to occur when old daily preventatives were used where dog had to be negative for heartworms as anaphalaxis more likely.||these are the medical facts. of course always best to know status of all dogs but your statements are not true

Dandruff
Q: Seems to come on when fall and winter comes and the home heat is turned on..he also likes to sleep on the solariums heated ceramic floor..what can i do to control the dry flaking skin? he is a long hair 12 yr. old and has had a complete thyroidectomy..has a moderate heart murmer and is on atenalol one quarter of a 25mg.tablet once a day. thankyou for your response.
A: I would try treating internall with derm caps and prozyme from 1800petmeds added to each meal. also consider better all natural diet like pet guard or wellness brand foods. if your cat is cooperative shampooing with chlorihexiderm shampoo can help as well

Chiggers
Q: We do a lot of camping and a few people we camp with got the chiggers. can my dogs get them? if so what can i do to prevent them and get rid of them? we use a preventic collar and frontline plus. thanks, ellen
A: What you are using should be fine

Any heartworm medicine i can give
Q: I took my dog to the vet the other day and was told my dog had heartworms, and the treatment cost would be $1,000 i am not working and i am unable to pay that much. is there anything else i can do?is there any medicine i can administer and buy myself? help please, i love my dog, but my finances will not permit me to pay for this costly treatment.
A: I would ask for retest of heartworm test and have it sent to outside lab. i have occasionally seen in office heartworm tests be false positives. that being said if true positive, then i woudl call around as this sounds very high to me for two injections of immiticide over 24 hours which is how we treat heartworms now. if still not affordable, then you could consider putting dog on monthly heartguard or interceptor which will prevent further reproduction of existing adult heartworms but will not kill adults
Shop for: interceptor

Parvo
Q: I have a 4month old black lab who has parvo. i also have another puppy. i am trying to keep them seperated. the black lab had only one set of shots but my other puppy has had two sets of shots and i gave her the third parvo shot today b/c the vet said i could give it a week early. do you think she will be safe from developing the parvo virus. also what is a normal body temperature of a dog and how is the best way to take the temperature of a dog. i am treating the lab with iv fluids sq and giving him daily injections of rocephin. however my other puppy was around him all weekend and has been out in the same yard. my lab did not develope any symptoms until after i had him neutered last friday.
A: I dont like neutering males this young even though the shelters do this because it is a shock to their immune system and can predispose to parvo attack. more vaccines are not necessarily better. they should be spaced out at least 2.5 to 3 weeks otherwise you may suppress immune system. no guarantees that other dog will not get parvo; have to wait an see. normal temp of dog is 100 to 102 degrees farenheit

Adult cat and kitten with fleas
Q: We have two cats, one that is a year old and one that is 14 weeks old. both are totally indoor. the kitten came from a home that had dogs and she had fleas when we got her, so now both have them. we have treated with over the counter topical flea med., but they are still present. what can we do to rid our cats and home of fleas once and for all?
A: You do need to treat the house as well as the cats. you can use virbac knockout room and area fogger for the house. use frontline plus for the cats and give them capstar tablets to kill the adult fleas on the cat.
Shop for: capstar, frontline plus, frontline
