Is neutering good to do?
Q: I have an 8 month old dog, and i would like to get him neutered, but my husband thinks that it's mean to do. what is your opinion on the benefits of neutering, or on the other hand, what are some bad things about it? will it calm him down and prevent him from running off if he were to get loose?
A: It can have some behavioral benefits on some dogs like decreasing wondering as well as calming some down. neutering does prevent unwanted pregnancies as well as some types of prostate problems
What damage could tape worms have done to my dog?
Q: I have a mixed breed dog that is almost two. there is a park right behind our house, and it is full of rabbits, squirrels, ground squirrels, and birds. she keeps getting tape worms and i think it is from finding and playing with the bodies of these other animals. we treat her with tablets and it goes away, but they keep coming back. we've been trying to keep her out of the park and away from the animals, but i'm worried about the long term effects the reocurring tapeworms will have on her. what should i look for and what can i do?
A: Most of time tapeworms do not cause any significant clinical illness in dogs or cats. most common sign are anal itching or irritation in that area. rarely any other reactions.

Runy sore eyes
Q: I have been treating my 17 yrs old poodle (otherwise excellent health) for a chronic open sores under his eye. as long as he is on 1 cephalexin 500mg caps a day for a month the sores go away. and after a month he off they come back. it on and off the cephalexin. i would like to know if i can gave him one 250mg of the cephalexin everyday of him life. any suggestions?
A: Some dogs can be kept on chronic antibiotic therapy due to tendency to recurrent infection because of lowered immune function, and at this age i don't see a problem with this if it keeps him comfortable.

Clear urine at first but then bloody
Q: When i walk my dog ( 7 years old ) his urine is clear. after he gets done his main needs and then trys to mark his territory at the end of his walk, his urine turns red with blood. i don't mean tinted red, i mean red red. it is only at the end of the walk. i am concerned since it is not all the time only at the end of the walk. thank you, tammy
A: Still could be urinary tract infection or possible bladder stone. take to vet for exam and urine analysis and x rays if needed
